Remembering: State 6 Bama 3

Posted on: July 16,2015

Thirty-five years later, the remarkable score remains: State 6, Bama 3. On Nov. 1, 1980, Mississippi State stunned the football world, knocking off No 1 ranked Alabama and Bear Bryant in Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
On Sept. 23, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will celebrate one of the most memorable events in Magnolia State sports history. The evening — “Remembering: State 6, Bama 3” — will feature a reception and banquet, along with highlights of the game with the late Jack Cristil’s call. Many of the State stars will share their memories.
Bear Bryant’s Crimson Tide, ranked No. 1 in the national polls, was a 20-point favorite. Mighty Alabama had won 28 consecutive games, 26 straight Southeastern Conference games and had defeated Mississippi State 22 straight times. Not a single Bulldogs player that day had been alive the last time State had beaten Bama.
Back then, Bryant’s Crimson juggernaut — so talented and so precise — lost football games about as often as America elected presidents. But the Tide lost on Nov. 1, 1980, three days before Ronald Reagan was elected the nation’s 40th president in a landslide victory over incumbent Jimmy Carter.
Quarterback John Bond, linebacker Johnie Cooks, defensive tackle Glen Collins and defensive end Tyrone Keys are among the State standouts who will take part in a panel discussion of the game. Rick Cleveland, who covered the game for The Clarion-Ledger will moderate the panel.
The event will be held in conjunction with the second annual Kent Hull Memorial Golf Tournament Sept. 24 at Live Oaks Golf Club. The Hull tournament celebrates the memory of Hall of Famer Kent Hull, who was the sophomore starting center on that 1980 State team. The tournament is held to defray costs of the Kent Hull Trophy, which goes annually to the state’s most outstanding collegiate offensive lineman, and to raise money for the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital UMC Candlelighters.
Tickets to the event are $100 each. Table sponsorships are available. Call the museum at 601 982-8264 to reserve seats or tables. The Hall of Fame holds approximately 220 and seats are expected to go fast.
